The Dunn County School Mentoring program was developed from the philosophy that through a strong foundation of caring and stable relations with positive adults, children are able to develop strong values, personal skills, and increase self-esteem and clarification of future goals.
The mentoring program has been meeting the needs of children and youth in the Dunn County area since 1997. The program offers early intervention for children in grades K-12 in any Dunn County school, who has been identified as struggling with or losing interest in some aspect of their school life, struggling with peer relationships, traumatic events which have been affecting the student’s performance or attitude toward school (divorce, death, in the family, moving to a new school), and inconsistencies in meeting schol expectations (attendance, teacher/student relationships).
Who Are the Mentors?
The mentors are adults from the community who like working with youth. They represent all kinds of jobs, hobbies, interests, education, and ages. These kind and generous volunteers recieve training about the program; sign a confidentiality clause; are matched one-to-one with students in the community. Mentors meet with the students for one class period once a week throughout the school year.
